5 things couples in long-distance relationships are sick of hearing
Everyone has this perception of how absolutely impossible long-distance relationships can be. All of us can talk about the usual problems that will come with it (whether we’ve experienced it ourselves or not) – the pain of missing your partner all the time, all the travel expenses just to see your significant other once, the pending decision of what the future will hold, and much more.
But let me tell you one of the biggest problems that accompany a long-distance relationship, one that not many have actually addressed: all the unwanted advice and statements from the people around you! Somehow, the minute you tell a person about your long distance relationship, they instantly feel the right to comment and give their unfiltered opinion on something they know absolutely nothing about.
Here are 5 things all couples in long-distance relationships are sick of hearing:
“You know, distance is really hard.”
Really? You don’t say? I actually didn’t notice that at all until the minute you said it. And since we’re telling each other things that we probably weren’t aware of till now, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that the sky is blue!
“I was in a long-distance relationship once”
Okay, I won’t start immediately ranting out on this one. I agree that some people who say this actually have been in a long-distance relationship and are trying to start a meaningful conversation where we can exchange our experiences and actually have an opportunity to learn a thing or two.
But for the most part, this statement usually implies that one time when their boyfriend or girlfriend went somewhere far for a business trip for about a week or so. No, this does not give you insight on what a long distance relationship actually feels like!
“Don’t you ever feel like dating/partying/messing around when they’re not with you?”
Yes, I do have some weak moments (just like all people who are in relationships) where I might find someone else a bit attractive or where I smile back at that hot guy that just walked in. But at no point have I ever been weak enough to actually give in to these temptations or to actually consider cheating on my partner.
It might be hard to believe but the bond you share with a long-distance partner has the potential to become stronger than anything you’ve ever known or felt. The greater part of your relationship will rely on the conversations you share and not on the physical intimacy you enjoy together. And while you talk endlessly on the phone for hours, you’ll see the topics range from how your day was to what your deepest fears have been. In between all these meaningful and deep conversations you’ll share, you’ll come to realize that this one person sitting thousands of miles away has the potential to make you happier than anyone else in the world!
“How do you manage your intimacy across this distance?”
Once again. Really? Go check out how this works: http://www.skype.com or open up your snapchat video or maybe your facetime. I can’t spell this one out for you!
“I don’t think this will work out.”
I’m sorry but can you tell me exactly which one of your failed relationships made you an expert on my love life? If you feel like you don’t have the courage and strength to handle being with someone over a long distance, if you can’t stay loyal to someone unless they’re right there in front of you, and if you prefer living life with some pre-conceived notions about everything that comes your way, doesn’t mean that everyone around you shares the same kind of weaknesses.
