• Infants (0-3 months): 14-17 hours a day
• Babies (4-11 months): 12-15 hours a day
• Children (1-2 years): 11-14 hours a day
• Pre-school age (3-5 years): 10-13 hours a day
• School age (6-13 years): 9-11 hours a day
• Adolescents (14-17 years old): 8-10 hours a day
• Young adults (18-25 years): 7-9 hours a day
• Adults (26-64 years): 7-9 hours a day
• Elderly people (65+ years): 7-8 hours a day

This is the first time a professional organization has made recommendations on how much a person should sleep according to their age, based on a systematic overview of the world’s scientific literature that links sleep with health, efficiency, and safety – said Charles Chaucler, a professor at the Medical School in Harvard.

For the largest group, the adults, the recommended duration of sleep remains unchanged, which is logical given that the 7 hours are sufficient for most of the people of this age. This report sets out the categories of young adults and elderly from the adult group because younger people need a little more sleep. Good sleep in young people improves memory up to 28 years later. But people who are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s do not sleep so well and that’s why their memory is diminishing.
