Whether it be candy, sweets or biscuits, there might be some things in here that you wouldn’t expect!
Sugar. According to Vanessa Quarmby, who is a nutritionist and dietitian, she says that there is no nutritional value in sugar and that she tries to avoid foods such as cakes, biscuits, sweets and convenience foods or drinks.
Diet foods. Amanda Hamilton from Viva Coco says that she adamantly stays away from diet foods. So things such as diet soda or artificial sweeteners are things that she actively avoids. She said: ‘the whole concept of low-fat eating is old fashioned and artificial sweeteners are disruptive to gut health and can lead to more sweet cravings long term. I prefer to keep things natural.’ Factory-farmed meat. A lot of nutritionists also say to avoid factory-farmed meat. That way the consumer can avoid toxins, chemicals, and bacteria. Furthermore, there is the whole ethical benefit to avoiding factory-farmed meat.
Soda. Katharina Kaiser who is a nutrition specialist at Freelectics said that she avoids fizzy drinks. She replaces energy drinks and sodas with an espresso or a matcha tea.
Condiments. Rhiannon Lambert, a nutritionist, says that she avoids condiments, especially ketchup. She said: ‘with it being heavily processed and full of sugar, I just can’t see how a side portion of roasted vine tomatoes isn’t seen as the better option, every single time. They burst in your mouth!’ Coriander. Steph Williams, a nutritionist at Weight Watchers, absolutely despises coriander. She says it tastes like ‘washing up liquid.’ And there might be some truth in that since some people find it hard to metabolize coriander. Processed meats. A lot of nutritionists tend to avoid processed meats since they are full of additives, artificial colorings, trans-fat and low-quality meat.
Manal Chouchane, a clinical nutritionist from BioCare, said: ‘such ingredients can be detrimental for our health as they can increase our cholesterol levels, and only provide us with empty calories with not many nutrients at all.’
Hydrogenated fats. Many health experts say to avoid hydrogenated fats or partially hydrogenated fats. ‘Consuming them is as unnatural to the body as if you were to consume plastic – your body doesn’t know what to do with them, so they can cause all sorts of unhealthy processes to occur.’ Food to go. Takeout foods (such as Chinese food) which have a lot of fat, grease, and sodium is a no go. It will make people extremely bloated which will cause the body to store tons of water.
Margarine. Many health experts avoid margarine or vegetable cooking oil like rapeseed or sunflower oil. Instead, they advocate the use of coconut oil or olive oil.
