Reasons for Getting Skin Fungus and How to Prevent It

Skin fungus is a very common skin problem which affects people of all ages, including children. A fungal infection is often impossible to avoid as fungi live everywhere. It’s important to note that there are beneficial fungi which live naturally on the skin and we’re not aware of them. However, when they proliferate, i.e. multiply too much, skin problems like ringworm, jock itch, yeast infection, athlete’s foot, etc. happen.

Fungal Infections

Even though they’re not life-threatening, they’re an uncomfortable health problem, that’s for sure. Fungal skin infections can occur due to numerous reasons. Some of the most common ones are sharing underwear, personal hygiene products, etc. with someone who’s already infected. Also, there are certain groups of people who’re more prone to fungal infections. For example, people with a weak immunity, people who sweat too much, doctors, nurses, medical students, people who have been taking antibiotics for a longer period of time, people with no bladder control, etc.

These infections can appear anywhere on the body, however, there are some areas where they’re most common such as the toes and feet, the armpits, the genitals, and skin areas with creases since fungus needs moisture to thrive. Therefore, to minimize your risk of a fungal infection, be careful when using public swimming pools and locker rooms. Also, avoid using combs and towels from such places.
Furthermore, synthetic material is the perfect environment for fungi, so you should avoid clothes made from this material and opt for cotton and linen. This goes for underwear as well. Last but not least, shower regularly and thoroughly cleanse the area beneath the breasts and the toes.

Treatment

When the immunity is weak, as mentioned previously, the risk of fungal infections is much greater. To improve the body’s immune response, you should include a lot of fruits and veggies to your diet, as well as natural probiotics. On the other hand, reduce the intake of carbs since fungus thrives on sugar. Make sure to get enough sleep, protein, healthy fat, and enough water. If you have a fungal infection, avoid scratching the area to prevent the infection from spreading. Maintain the area clean and dry and shower regularly.

Types of Fungal Infections

Athlete’s Foot

This infection affects the toes and the skin in between and causes it to go prickly red. It can also affect the soles of the feet.

Jock Itch

This infection occurs in the groin area, usually in teenager boys and adult males who play sports and spend a lot of time in locker rooms. The infection is manifested by red scaly and sore patches.

Ringworm

This infection looks as a small, lifted red area which resembles a small blemish. It’s prickly and it can easily become flaky. It can occur anywhere, except on the scalp, feet, and groin.
